A native of Dayton, Ohio, Gregory Montfort Dearth graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1971. He began his art career as a Commercial Illustrator, working for respected publishing houses, Fortune 500 companies and virtually every major advertising agency in the United States. His work was continually featured in some of the advertising and design industry’s most prestigious magazines, including Communication Arts and Print.

While garnering attention and awards for his work as a Commercial Illustrator, Greg found himself increasingly drawn to the world of fine art. His first love was portraiture, but he chose to broaden his focus of subject matter to include landscapes and still life. He went into intense private study with portrait artist K.C. Wells, pastel artist Judith Carducci and, at the Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia, artist Nelson Shanks.

Greg continues to draw inspiration from some of the most influential artists of the past and present. He has studied masters like Hals, Raeburn, Lawrence, Van Dyke and Sargent, as well as contemporaries like Richard Schmid and Scott Christensen.

“I do not strive to break with the past,” Dearth said. “But rather to extend the great traditions of art into the present.”

Throughout the years, Greg’s paintings have been exhibited in numerous galleries, including a large mural that is on permanent display at the National Civil War museum. He is also in great demand to paint portraits of notable leaders in both the private and public sectors. You will find his work in Universities and boardrooms across the country, as well as in many private collections.

Currently, Greg resides in southwest Ohio and is a member of The Portrait Society of America and Oil Painters of America. He has also been an instructor of portrait painting at the Dayton Art Institute and currently teaches drawing and oil painting at Rosewood Art Centre in Kettering.
